Graston Technique

Blue Hills Specialty

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

We believe that every patient should have access to the very best physical therapy techniques. That’s why we stay up to speed with the latest clinical research and explore new ways of getting even better results for our patients.

The Graston Technique is one form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) that enables physical therapists to effectively manage stubborn soft tissue injuries. The technique utilizes specially designed steel instruments, combined with stretches and graduated loading exercises, to speed recovery.

The technique is mostly used to treat degenerative tendon disorders, stubborn scar tissue restrictions, and to help reduce edema. Current research indicates that mechanical stimulation to these structures applied in the right direction and dosage can greatly improve healing times.

The manual technique is never typically applied in isolation. Superior outcomes in tendon healing require various loading stimuli, therefore Graston/ IASTM augments a specific loading protocol when appropriate. Blue Hills Sports & Spine Rehabilitation has Graston and IASTM trained physical therapists at our locations in Braintree, Weymouth, and Plymouth.
